Session title: Capital Corridor: re-envisioning purpose and function

Session description: History, politics, civic engagement, architecture, visitors, tourism, employees, pedestrians - simply put, our state capital campuses are sacred grounds. As state administrators, we are challenged by preserving historic buildings and protecting national landmarks, while simultaneously updating our capital corridors to better reflect aspects of modern state government. In this learning lab, we will explore how states are transforming their capital facilities with respect for the past but also an eye towards the future. With regards to the physical environment, facilities in and around the capital are being updated with key elements of accessibility, transparency, constituent experience and employee engagement.

We will explore the following questions with an esteemed panel of state real estate and facilities leaders:

  • What strategies are states employing to improve administrative spaces in and around the capital while actively reducing the wider footprint
  • What civic and cultural investments are being made to better portray the seat of government?
  • How do we balance purpose and aesthetics with security, parking, sharing of common infrastructure and other functional challenges?
